What the total value includes

Total yearly value = base × (1 + target bonus %) + equity per year + 401(k) match + employer health contribution + other perks − commute cost. Commute cost is days per week × cost per day × 48 working weeks. All figures are pre-tax so both offers are compared the same way.

Worked example

Offer A pays $100,000 with a 10% bonus, $5,000 a year in equity, a 4% match and $3,000 of health benefits, but needs five office days at $10 a day: 110,000 + 5,000 + 4,000 + 3,000 − 2,400 = $119,600. Offer B pays $110,000 with no bonus or equity, a 3% match, $2,000 of benefits, $1,000 of perks and no commute: $116,300. The lower base wins by $3,300 a year.

FAQ

How should I value stock options or RSUs?

For RSUs at a public company, use the grant value divided by the vesting years. For startup options, many people discount heavily or count them as zero, because most options never become valuable.

Should I include taxes?

For a like-for-like comparison, pre-tax is fine. If the jobs are in different states or countries, compare take-home pay too.

Is the bonus guaranteed?

Use the target bonus only if the company usually pays it. Ask the recruiter what share of target was paid out in recent years.
